I’m Adama (pronounced like “Adam” with an “uhh” at the end) Kamara. I am a community-driven Sierra Leonean-American creative strategist, writer, and researcher based in Washington, D.C.

My work spans disciplines and mediums—from brand positioning to archival research and curation— what every project has in common is my belief in the transformative power of storytelling to cultivate a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the rich tapestry that is the human experience.

Currently, I work as a Senior Creative Strategist at Creative Theory Agency and freelance as a writer, curator, researcher, and brand consultant.

Previously, I led the Racial Equity Grant at the human rights nonprofit Humanity in Action; served as a research and curatorial associate at The James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference; managed programming and content at a Black-owned art advisory and media platform; and conducted research on gender-based violence in West Africa at The Carter Center.

I hold bachelor’s degrees in Anthropology and International Studies from Emory University, where I graduated magna cum laude. These disciplines form the foundation of my approach to creative work and fuel my passion for driving social change through meaningful connections with global audiences. Among my proudest accomplishments at Emory are serving as the editor-in-chief of the university’s first and only Black student publication and being selected as my class's commencement speaker.

Some of My Favorite Work

Through Thunder and Fire: A Group Exhibition Strategy + Curatorial Research

I led the curation of a group exhibition whose images—created by Google’s inaugural cohort of the Image Equity Fellowship— explore the urgent, untold stories of 20 diverse Fellows' communities through the lenses of identity, belonging, movement and migration, coming of age and home. A curated selection of images from Through Fire and Thunder  opened in May of 2023 at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. The entirety of their Fellowship portfolios live on a dedicated digital gallery site via Google Arts & Culture.

For The Atlantic’s branded content studio, Re:Think , I wrote an article titled ‘Dr. Death Season 2: A True-Crime Balancing Act,’ covering a screening of Peacock’s thrilling anthology series. As the writer and creative marketing strategist for this campaign, I led the content development from reporting on the event to crafting the narrative, revising the piece, and delivering relevant copy across social channels.

'Black Cosmopolitan: James Weldon Johnson in an Age of Empire,' an exhibition at the Rose Archives and Rare Book Library, highlights Johnson's diplomatic career and its global influence on black freedom advocacy.

As curatorial associate to Dr. Kali-Ahset Amen, I spearheaded the development of the exhibition's digital component, focusing on the international dimensions of the African American struggle for political and social equality in the early 20th century. Additionally, I provided support for curating the physical exhibition, including photos, letters, and information from the Rose Library, as well as collections from Yale University’s Beinecke Library, the University of Florida, and others.

SheaMoisture Impact Report
Creative Strategy

Working to create SheaMoisture and Sundial Brands' first-ever impact report, our goal was to activate the brand and highlight the significant contributions that SheaMoisture has made to the Black community since 2020. I supported my team in leading creative strategies under the wrapper 'Wash Wealth Repeat' and provided strategic consulting on their event programming and content to effectively communicate their impact
